How did CarFreeBrad Start? Humble Beginnings, the very first entry!

In case you have ever wondered how this magnificent experiment all got started.  The lesson here is to just DO IT!  Look at this entry as a prime example of this theory.  I obviously just sat down and decided that something would be written by the time I got up.

Today marks 3 weeks until I will be without my beloved Subaru Forester.  This will be the first time in my driving life that I have been without a vehicle.  My little ’84 toyota corolla that once belonged to my grandmother until today I’ve had an automobile.  I’m giving up my car for a number of reasons.  The first is that my lease is up, but beyond that I realized I need to take a good long look at myself and my lifestyle.  I love my car, well, I love having a car.  The freedom it gives me, the ability to go get food anytime and forget something and just “run right back out”.  In almost every way I’m just like everyone who would never EVER consider going car less.

I realized today that the first step of going car less may in fact be the most difficult as I have decided to try this in Worcester, MA.  This city is not known, for much and definitely not known to be commuter friendly.  As a grad student at Clark University, I have a room on campus but spend most of my time and nights at my girlfriends condo for all the obvious reasons (cleanliness, scent, student housing is pretty terrible) and she is there and I like to see her (she has a huge TV with apple TV hooked up).  This commute is just over a mile and less than 10 mins by bike.  I have yet to walk it so I have no idea.

I had intended this first entry to be a funny, insightful introduction to who I am, why I’m doing this and the number of ways it will help me and others like me but after walking (in 36” of snow) from my car to class that will have to wait.  I am just now realizing that I have figure out how the F*CK to get around this city without my car.
