“TreeHugger has covered the tragic death of Jenna Morrison, the 38 year old pregnant mom squished under the wheels of a truck turning right in Toronto a few weeks ago. Her death has led many to question why there are not separated bike lanes; the usual response from the politicians and the engineers is that there isn’t enough room, that you cannot give bikes their own lanes without taking something away from cars, and they don’t do that in Toronto.

Two bike activists, James Schwartz of the Urban Country and Dave Meslin of the Toronto Bike Union, set out to demonstrate that this wasn’t true. They went to the intersection where Jenna was crushed and recycled twigs, cups and the general detritus one finds at the side of the road in an industrial part of town, and built their own bike lane. (the painted bikes were installed by other guerrilla activists earlier)”

This is just a great example of human nature.  If there is a lane drivers respect it(most of the time).  It goes back to my belief that drivers don’t actually want to kill cyclists and don’t hate us and vice versa.  They just don’t know how to deal with us resulting in a very dangerous and emotionally charged situation for everyone.  It’s amazing what a little direct guidance does to remedy this issue.
